On Saturday, June 15, 2013 Rockaway Boro Little League (RBLL) will be hosting the Morris County Challenger League. The Challenger League is a baseball league for disabled children. It was established in 1986, by Williamsport Little League. Bergen and Union counties in New Jersey had instituted their Challenger League programs since 1989. The Morris County Challenger Little League was established in 1999. The dedicated volunteers create a positive environment for the children who are in need of this program. The majority of the participants are from Morris County, and a few from the neighboring counties.
We need 40 RBLL players to volunteer to come on the field and partner up with a Challenger League player and be their “buddies” for the game. The role of buddies is to help facilitate the game of baseball in a fun, interactive, and helpful way.
Four challenger teams will play each other at 2:00. 40 buddies will assist the Challenger players play a tee-ball style game.
At 4:00, two competition Challenger League teams will play two teams of buddies. The buddies will play by fun rules designed to help our players feel or experience what if may be like to play through physical challenges.
At the end of the day I’m not sure who gets more out of it. But be prepared to be inspired, the Challenger players come to play. And our players are hardwired for empathy; they just need an opportunity to experience it.
The role of buddy is open to the first 40, current Rockaway Boro Little League player’s 8 years old and up.
We also need 30 adult volunteers to ensure all of our guests and RBLL players have a great day.

Hello, my name is Tom Gardner. I am the State Coordinator for the NJ State Elks Challenger Batterup Program. This is a hitting competition for our Challenger/Buddy Ball players like Home Run Derby. we run it through our local lodges with those winners advancing to District Finals and then onto the States. We have players from Little League, Cal Ripken, Rec Depts., and schools from all over the state. In 2012, we had over 1400 participants and that will continue to grow. In order for that to happen, we will need your help. Here is a copy of the rules. Please review them. I hope this will be a welcome addition to your baseball league. Please contact me if you are interested and we will get you on board. Thanks and hope to hear from you.
